Let’s face it California is easily the most peculiar state in America and Marin County boasts the strangest collection of tree worshipping, yoga challenged, hot tub devotees on the planet. But by far, the most bizarre community of all is the Sausalito waterfront. It is actually quite amazing that no one has published a novel about this eclectic group of dichotomous eccentrics, but I guess that’s why the author ended up living offshore in a 63 foot Navy boat at anchor in Richardson Bay for 10 years. There’s been a war going on out there for decades, an unusual battle between the folks in their million dollar homes on shore and the crazy offshore boat owners commonly referred to as “anchor outs,” a select breed of eccentric artists, anarchistic outcasts, and Vietnam Vets turned modern day pirates—the last survivors of the houseboat wars.
" Queen" is a fictional account of Maroon County’s Dickerson Bay and the rag-tag characters who make it such a colorful place to live. It tracks the story of Cassie Rose, a blonde, blue-eyed 29-year old hell-raiser living alone on her funky 63 foot houseboat anchored offshore from Soft-City, California, and her valiant attempts to preserve anchoring-out as a way of life from encroaching real estate developers, over-priced lawyers, and corrupt politicians. Over the course of three grueling days, our heroine is forced to use every shred of her intelligence, humor and strength to outwit a crooked County Supervisor, drug-smugglers, an undercover CIA agent, and the carnivorous media. The action includes sexual blackmail, boatloads of cocaine, crazy garbage boat owners, monstrous storms, as well as a triumphant battle with the local Coast Guard. This is the kind of book that blends hilarious high adventure with sea story magic set against a deeper set of moral issues while focusing on a feminine heroine against the backdrop of the late 1980s.
Luckily Cassie Rose, the infamous Queen, has help from her many anchor-out friends. There’s Homeboy, also known as the galloping ghost of the Pacific Coast, a burly Vietnam Vet ready and willing to fight for what he believes in most freedom. Then there’s Bunny Stopwater, an ex-Midwestern wifey-type turned lesbian waterfront patriot; Lon Penwinkkle, the get down and always dirty scavenging connoisseur; Marlboro Jon, the waterfront’s main cowboy surfer stud and Pasqual, a manic-depressive garbage collector who’s inability to differentiate between dreams and reality help him to ultimately save the day. Great book and fun reading. The main character, Cassie, is a spunky fun person that is sensual and yet powerful. She is not going to take anything off of anybody. Her love interest sounds awesome and the kind of guy you hope to meet on a dark ship and in danger. The intrigue was stimulating and towards the end it was hard to put down. Kym really nailed it. I was privileged to be a very early reader of this novel. I loved it then, and I love it now. The story is timeless You must take a stand and fight for your beliefs, for the things that matter. Much like the story itself, the protagonist Cassie Rose is crafty, passionate, resourceful, and brimming with energy -- an queen in the modern world. Her houseboat (which she christens the Queen) is a striking major character It is Cassie's home, her companion, her cause -- her real and metaphorical anchor (!) in a chaotic life. There is romance, danger, humor, a wee bit of drugs ("No papers, no cry"), some sexy bits, sly social commentary, and overall, a late-20th-century Marin vibe that holds everything together marvelously.
What a fun ride!!
What an amazing insight to a world I have always seen, but known little about. It's a fun little story, with a political slant.
I couldn't put it down! If you're a closet hippie or even an outright hippie this book will resonate in so many ways! Please write more!
